Crafting in Mythos
May 02, 2008 - 12:03 PM - by Leord
Massively.com has looked into Mythos, and done more than an average preview. They have made a special article about crafting in Mythos, and summarized both crafting quests as well as the benefits of crafted items over regular drops. They also added a small pile of screenshots.

Quote:
The old adage -- if you want something done right, do it yourself -- has never been more true than in Flagship Studios' Mythos. You can find excellent weapons and gear from monsters or treasure chests, but if you want something uniquely yours, crafting is your best bet. By focusing on certain crafting trees, master crafters can make gear with stats that dwarf that of dropped gear. Further, crafted items may be adorned with temporary buffs called heraldries. The monsters won't know what hit them.

Mythos Dev Update
Apr 30, 2008 - 9:42 PM - by Ossless
A word from Baldree regarding Nythos:

Mythos is now undergoing a big change – one prompted by your feedback and our observations. We will be relaunching with a contiguous overworld for each zone, starting with Greenreach. What does this mean to you?

As you’re aware, the ‘outdoors’ in Mythos as it currently stands are randomized, and relatively isolated. As such, there’s not as much of a sense of place as we’d like to see, and a lot of the socialization that is important to MMOs takes place only in towns. In an effort to bring our players together more, and to instill a greater sense of place and exploration, you’ll now be able to run through an overworld that is not randomized, but has real locations and places to explore. Does this mean that we’re doing away with randomization? Definitely not! All of the dungeons in the game remain randomly generated. Does this mean we want you to spend an inordinate amount of time traveling? Again, definitely not! We’re making every effort to keep the pace of gameplay fast, and immediate, while still providing this critical social component.

So, how does this work in practice? I’m glad you asked!
  • Greenreach is now one contiguous landmass, with hills, mountains, forests, valleys, rivers, bridges, and lakes. You’ll be able to remember where things are and return to them. Instead of traveling down an ‘alley’ in a random chunk of wilderness to get to a location, you may stumble across unexpected things, or dungeons to explore. The overworld is made by hand, and as such, it is much more purposeful, with settlements, farms, outposts, and much more interesting areas. Stonehill quarry looks like a Quarry. Gussen Farm looks like an actual farm.
  • The landmass is OPEN. You are not locked to roads. Walk anywhere, and explore the hidden nooks and crannies.
  • Monsters remain within their regions, so there won’t be any trains of wolves across the... [Read More]

Extremely Brief Guardian Mythos Preview
Apr 30, 2008 - 11:57 AM - by Leord
Greg Howson, who works with The Guardian in the UK has checked out Mythos and given a (short) tidbit of his impressions:

Quote:
But shake those WoW comparisons - admittedly difficult at times given the look and feel - and you've got a game full of addictive leveling/character advancement stuff that could easily suck you in for hours.
Seems he'll await release until making a proper run-down of the game though.

MMORPG-Center Mythos Preview
Apr 28, 2008 - 11:20 AM - by Leord
The guys over at MMORPG-Center has tried out Mythos, and as everyone else points out, the game is really good!

Quote:
After playing the game a few days, now in Closed Beta phase, i got to say that it one of those great polished games even when they are Closed Beta. Mythos shows much potential with great and fun gameplay features, played casual or more, great graphics and atmosphere, free to play, ill say this is gona be the Free MMORPG of the year in our book.
The future might actually be even brighter for Mythos than how it turned out for Hellgate, and the only thing that seriously could stop Mythos from becoming a big hit would be if Blizzard released Diablo 3. Still, even if that happened there is the advantage of Mythos being free, so people would probably play it anyway.

Stratics Mythos Preview
Apr 25, 2008 - 1:33 PM - by Leord

Another Mythos Preview, this time by Stratics. Tricia "Seridove" Bennon of their staff have tried out Mythos and given us her opinions of the game.

Quote:
Overall, I found playing this MMO to be a great experience. This game is cute and I had a lot of fun. With playable quests, instanced dungeons, a complex skillset, an achievements list and more, Mythos has a surprising amount of content and customization for the free-to-play genre of MMOs. The gameplay will not only appeal to the casual gamer, but also to the cash-conscious one who is looking for a game that offers just as much as those big boy subscription titles without a huge sacrifice of quality or quantity.

Mythos Server Stress Test!
Apr 25, 2008 - 1:13 PM - by Leord
It seems obvious that we are closing in on the Open Beta now, as the Flagship team is making what appears to be final preparations to let the masses in - a stress test!

Today, Friday 25th of April at 12:00 PDT (19:00 in London, 20:00 in Central Europe, 21:00 in Helsinki) there will be a massive stress test in Mythos, so this is our chance to try and break Mythos! Well, that is basically the goal! Test the limits.

Just log on around this time, and play like you normally do, and make sure to try and get all your friends online at the same time. This may make things buggy or jumpy, but this is all still within the goal of any stress test Flagship is trying anyway!

See you online!

Flagship Thanks the Asian Testers
Apr 25, 2008 - 1:02 PM - by Leord
Seeing as some countries no longer will be able to use the Mythos Beta until it's launched, Flagship wanted to take the time and thanking the Asian testers for their assistance.

Quote:
Flagship Studios would like to express our deep gratitude towards our Asian beta players. Your advice and reports have served to improve Mythos in every way.

We look forward to bringing back Mythos to Asia after we have localized the game and prepared local servers to begin local beta testing.
It has been a wonderful experience directly interacting with our Asian testers. We consider it an honor to participate in creating Mythos with gamers from the best gaming countries in the world. It is with regret that we must pass you on to our talented partners, HanbitSoft, but we have total confidence in their abilities and plans. They will depend on you for localized testing to make Mythos as good as it can be in Asia. Thank you again for your dedicated assistance and we’ll see you soon!

Open Beta? Not for Everyone!
Apr 23, 2008 - 3:04 PM - by Leord
It is very apparent that the Open Mythos Beta is around the corner, as it was even promised to come at the end of last month! Things are moving, and we should expect the Open Beta to start almost any day now!

One piece of news that is good for most, and less good for some is that details of the Open Beta is starting to finalise. The Official site declares that while they want a great number of people attending the Open Beta, there are a few countries which will NOT be eligible to play, even if you have a Closed Beta account at the moment:

Quote:
Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, India, Japan, Cambodia, North Korea, South Korea, Laos, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Mongolia, Macao, Malaysia, Nepal, Philippines, Pakistan, Singapore, Thailand, Taiwan, Vietnam, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Estonia, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Lithuania, Latvia, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan
Sorry guys =/

I assume this has to do with laws on distributing software rather than the actual testing, or possibly that the countries in question has too bad connections with the stateside servers.

Mythos Preview by CVG Again
Apr 23, 2008 - 2:57 PM - by Leord
CVG seems to have an interest for Mythos ideed. This is the second Preview they have made of the game in the last couple of months. It's really nice to see more media coverage on Mythos!

One thing to point out when it comes to "ingots" and gold is that the developers have actually said before that ingots, after being purchased, will be freely tradable. This means that you in theory can have everything that someone who spends money in the game have, if you just manage to do good trades! You don't have to buy anything and still do everything under the right circumstances!

Back to CVG:

Quote:
While it lacks the depth and narrative of its peers, it makes up for it by having such tight and moreish gameplay. Skills need tweaking, but the beta should fix all that.

Even this early stage, Mythos has more spit, polish and gameplay to it than any other free-to-play MMO out there. It's exciting, addictive and pleasing to the eye, and there's little to dissuade you from giving it a try. Look out for the open beta this spring.

Travis Baldree and Max Schaefer Interview
Apr 23, 2008 - 2:41 PM - by Leord
TenTonHammer has an interview with Travis Baldree and Max Schaefer, the Lead Developer and Executive Developer of Mythos.

Quote:
Q: Talk about ingots some. How will you introduce items that are good enough that players want to buy them while still making sure that players who do not spend money can get the best items in the game? Can you give us an example of an item that we might purchase with ingots?
A: Every day we come up with new things that players could purchase. Our rule of thumb is that it should be cool, but it shouldn’t be necessary. And we won’t just sell the cool items. The sort of things we’ll sell are potions that give a boost to experience, or a shared account stash, or cosmetic items that make you look cooler than anyone else. Down the road, we’ll add guild houses, hopefully player housing, but that’s the direction we’re taking. We don’t think that buying the coolest items is fun for anyone. We want you to have to earn your loot, whether you’re paying or not.
Q: Will crafters in Mythos be popular? That is, will their items be as good as drops or better?
A: The best answer to that is that they should be “different,” but neither better nor worse. Of course, such perfect balance is impossible, so the realistic expectation should be that crafters will be a bit better in some areas and worse at others. We think crafting will be popular, especially for the more hard core players who invest a lot of time in building their characters.
Q: When is Open Beta?
A: Open Beta will begin very soon. We won’t set a date because our criterion is not “when” but “what.” When we’re satisfied we’re ready,
